Hyperhidrosis is a long-term condition that causes the body to sweat more than it needs to. It most often affects the underarms, hands, feet, or face. This extra sweating can affect daily life in many ways. People may feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, or anxious in social situations. It can also affect work and personal relationships.

There are several ways to treat hyperhidrosis. These include strong antiperspirants, tablets or injections, and a treatment called iontophoresis. In more severe cases, surgery may be considered.

Even though the condition can be very distressing, many people delay seeking help. Some may not know that effective treatments are available. Others may feel embarrassed or worried about the cost of treatment. As a result, they may live with symptoms for many years before speaking to a doctor.

Primary hyperhidrosis usually begins during the teenage years and is not caused by another medical condition. Secondary hyperhidrosis happens when excess sweating is linked to an underlying health problem or a side effect of medication. Don't I need to sweat? Is stopping my sweating safe?

While sweating is an essential bodily function for temperature regulation, we only block a very small percentage of the body’s total sweat glands when we treat specific body areas for hyperhidrosis The armpits, for example, are home to less than 2% of the body’s sweat glands. Blocking the function of such a small proportion of sweat glands does not cause any issues.

What should I try before medical treatment for sweating?

The first treatment to try is a strong topical antiperspirant such as Stop Sweat Fix. Antiperspirants work by plugging the sweat glands to reduce the flow of perspiration.
