Hyperhidrosis is a chronic medical condition characterised by excessive sweating, most commonly of the underarms, hands, feet or face. It can have a very significant impact on a person’s quality of life both physically and emotionally. Often sufferers struggle with embarrassment, and social anxiety. Treatment options include antiperspirants, medications (oral and injectable), iontophoresis, and in severe cases, surgery.
Despite how significant and distressing the impacts of hyperhidrosis can be, people are often hesitant to seek treatment and usually put up with their excessive sweating for years before discussing it with a medical professional. Primary hyperhidrosis often starts during adolescence and is not related to an underlying medical condition. Anti-sweat injection treatment is considered highly effective for treating hyperhidrosis. Studies have shown it reduces sweating by about 85% in the treated areas.
We treat the axillae (underarms), hands (palms), feet (soles) and forehead. We also treat other body areas with excessive sweating after discussion with our doctors. Anti-sweat injections are effective and well tolerated. There is no down-time and you can resume normal activities after treatment. Results are seen within days and typically last 4-6 months before treatment will need to be repeated.

There is no known cause for Primary Hyperhidrosis. There are likely to be some genetic factors at play as it often runs in families. The nerves that trigger sweating seem to be overactive in people with primary hyperhidrosis. Some people have specific triggers like stress, being nervous or eating spicy food.
If your sweating has been long standing and affects specific areas of the body (eg. underarms, hands, feet, forehead), is symmetrical (happening in a similar way on both sides of the body) and reduces at night then you likely have primary hyperhidrosis.
If your sweating is whole body sweating or more generalised, if it did not start in adolescence, if it started in the context of a new medication or it has other associated symptoms (eg. weight changes, palpitations or menstrual irregularities) then you may have a secondary cause for your hyperhidrosis.
